Candidate Biographies

Lauren Davis

My own background and experiences have made me the person I am today and are the very reason I am writing to you as the 2020 Democratic nominee and the very first woman of color to ever hold such a title. I was born in 1978 in Durham, North Carolina to two lovely parents who did everything they could to support my brother and I. My mom was a teacher at our local public school and my dad worked nights in manufacturing. Growing up in Durham, I saw many families in my community struggle to get by, including my own, but no matter how tough things became though, my parents never stopped fighting for their rights and remained union members until retirement. Unfortunately, I witnessed my community in Durham struggle with the abuses of police power at the cost of lives.

As a biology student at the University of North Carolina, I learned about the educational disparities present in the United States and fostered my love of caring for others.  I then joined the Navy and became a combat nurse. After serving for six years, I enrolled at Duke University and earned my Masters of Public Health. My professional life has centered around the intersection of healthcare and policy. I served in the American Red Cross for 9 years, tending to natural disaster supply chains and ensuring that Americans were receiving the quality healthcare they needed. In 2014, I was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina’s 1st District. I have served on the Armed Services committee and fostered communication across the aisle to promote effective legislation.

Through meeting constituents, I have witnessed extreme differences in access to affordable healthcare, quality education, fair employment, unbiased police, and a healthy environment. I have seen how these differences are splitting our exceptional country apart, and it was ultimately this realization that brought me to run for President of the United States. I am an experienced veteran and leader, and I will bring unity to this nation.

Carter Hernandez

Born in 1961, Carter Hernandez grew up in one of the poorest areas of Pueblo, Colorado, and is a second-generation American. He learned the value of a good education early on, seeing his parents have to bounce from job-to-job. He was pushed to do the best he could, always try his hardest, and to always be grateful for the opportunities that the United States offered him. When he got to high school, he not only understood how a good education could make a difference in people’s lives, but also the power of government, being inspired for the fight for civil rights and a more peaceful America that defined the 1960s and 70s. During this time, he also grew to appreciate nature and the environment through the hikes and walks that his mother would take him on. These not only served as great memories, but also were the catalyst for his environmental activism.

He graduated high school in 1979, and attended Dartmouth University where he was able to combine his two passions and studied political science and environmental science. When he graduated in 1983, he went back to his home state of Colorado and worked at the League of Conservation Voters. At the LCV, he saw citizens taking issues into their own hands and how they needed a champion, and Carter wanted to be that champion. He decided to run for Senate, and in 1992 the voters gave him the chance to represent them, and he has done so since.

While in the Senate, he has served on the Committee on Environment and Public Works, HELP, and Committee on the Judiciary. He has worked closely with President Barack Obama to ensure that, despite opposition and obstruction from the GOP, the Senate will still work for the people. Following the example of his colleague Bernie Sanders, he has helped mentor freshman senators, and worked to ensure that the freshman senators never lost sight of who they were fighting for: the people.

Carter Hernandez is incredibly hopeful and grateful to be on the ticket as Vice President, and is excited to roll up his sleeves and get to work for the American people.
